Thursday, 4th February 2010, 13::41
An employment initiative has helped 100 people to get construction jobs in Manchester.
The project, set up 18 months ago by urban regeneration company New East Manchester, The Manchester College and recruitment agency Work Solutions, has also given 300 local people the skills to get construction jobs through a training programme.
Chris Leary is the 100th person to get a construction job through the scheme and he said it was a dream come true for him.
He said: "The training course was really good and gave me a whole new set of skills."
Mr Leary, 28, will now be working with PDR Construction on the construction job to build a new Morrisons superstore in Openshaw.
Work began on the £40 million construction job in November 2009.
Peter Tavernor, principal of The Manchester College said that in a tough time for the sector, it was a real achievement to have helped 100 people to get construction jobs.
