Everton's plans for stadium construction job are rejected

Thursday, 26th November 2009, 15::51

A planned stadium construction job by Everton FC has been rejected by the government.

The club had hoped to build a new 50,000-seater ground in Kirkby.

As part of the planned construction job, a new retail park would have been built alongside the stadium, creating around 7,000 jobs.

Everton was working on the plans with Tesco but faced opposition to the £400 million development from local residents, who claimed their area could not cope with the arrival of a Premier League ground.

Robert Elstone, Everton's chief executive, told Sky Sports News that the cancellation of the project would mean the club may consider a ground-share with arch-rivals Liverpool.

"A shared stadium is perhaps an option if it's affordable," he said.

Communities secretary John Denham said that he had backed the decision of the planning inspector to block the construction job.

"Ministers thought long and hard about the case and decided that the negative impacts outweigh the benefits," he stated.

Last month, Tottenham Hotspur applied for planning permission to build a new 56,000 seater stadium opposite its current ground in London.
