Construction jobs planned for railway stations

Wednesday, 18th November 2009, 10::45

Construction jobs worth a total of £50 million are planned on ten railway stations around the country.

Transport secretary Lord Adonis announced the move following a report into the state of Britain's stations that called for an introduction of minimum standards across the UK.

Lord Adonis said that he concurred with the findings of the report.

"I want every station to be a good station - a hub of local community life and somewhere that you wouldn't mind spending time, with adequate facilities," he explained.

The majority of the railway stations earmarked for improvement are in north-west England.

Construction jobs will be carried out at Manchester Victoria, Preston, Stockport, Wigan North Western, Liverpool Central and Warrington Bank Quay.

Elsewhere in the country, Clapham Junction, Barking, Luton and Crewe will also be benefiting from the construction funding.

Earlier this month, Network Rail announced its own plans to improve the state of the UK's railways stations.

It plans to spend around £3.25 billion on upgrades to more than 2,000 sites between now and 2014.
