Astute submarine engineering job completed by BAE Systems
Tuesday, 17th November 2009, 14::06
The engineering job on the first Astute submarine has been completed by BAE Systems.
It is now undergoing sea trials that BAE Systems says are designed to prove it will be the "most formidable vessel of its kind" ever used by the Royal Navy.
The engineering job on the nuclear-powered attack submarine was carried at BAE's dockyard in Barrow-in-Furness and the vessel has now been moved to its operational base in Faslane.
Sea trials on the submarine are set to last for several months and will be carried out by Royal Navy crew members alongside BAE Systems' own engineers and technicians.
BAE's submarine solutions managing director John Hudson praised the engineering job on the 7,400 tonne craft.
"I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank every single person in the business who have played their part in helping deliver the boat," he said.
Earlier this month, BAE was awarded with the 2009 Secretary of Defence Performance-Based Logistics Award for its work on a radio frequency jamming device with the US Navy.
