Mantis engineering job declared a success by BAE Systems
Monday, 16th November 2009, 11::07
A BAE Systems engineering job on the largest unmanned aircraft ever built in the UK has been declared a success following an initial trial flight.
The maiden flight of the next generation autonomous system, known as Mantis, took place in Australia.
Rolls-Royce and a number of other companies worked alongside BAE Systems on the engineering job, which was partly-funded by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Chris Allam, managing director of the autonomous system and future capability business at BAE Systems, praised the speed in which the project had reached completion.
"Mantis has gone from concept to flight in just 19 months and the MoD, BAE Systems and a number of industry parties have worked together to make this happen," he said.
Mr Allam added that the success of the engineering job confirmed the skill and innovation within the UK aerospace sector.
Last week, it was revealed that BAE Systems' work on warships had contributed around £600 million to the UK economy and supported almost 15,000 jobs.
