Talks continue over Bristol City stadium construction job
Thursday, 5th November 2009, 14::54
The construction job of building a new stadium for Bristol City Football Club moved a step closer last night after council planners gave their support to the scheme.
Plans for the Ashton Vale construction job had been opposed by green-belt campaigners and changes were made to the original designs following a five-hour meeting.
Proposals to build housing on the site have been removed and the club have been ordered to present updated plans to the council in six months time.
Colin Sexstone, Bristol City chief executive, declared himself pleased with the outcome of the evening's events.
"The biggest hurdle was the councillors being minded to approve a stadium in the green belt and we have got through that," he said.
"We have a lot of work to do - but are positive."
Last month, Tottenham Hotspur applied for planning permission to build a new 56,000 seater stadium on a site opposite their current ground.
