Nuclear power 'will create high-quality engineering jobs'

Friday, 23rd October 2009, 11::33

The next generation of nuclear power stations will create thousands of construction and engineering jobs, according to a trade union.

Plans to build up to 11 nuclear power plants have caused extensive debate, with anti-nuclear campaigners claiming there is no place for the technology in the UK's energy mix.

However, supporters of the plants insist that they offer a way of helping the country to achieve greater energy security and to hit its renewable energy targets.

Mike Graham, national secretary of engineering union Prospect, said the power stations could also have a beneficial impact on the economy.

"These projects will create thousands of high-quality new jobs, at both the construction and operation stages, which can only be good news," said Mr Graham.

His comments came after the Infrastructure Planning Commission said it expects to consider applications from companies keen to build nuclear power stations at Sizewell and Hinckley Point.

The body is also likely to consider the merits of five wind farms and a biomass power plant next year.
