More confidence displayed by engineering students

Engineering students are more confident than students of other subjects in terms of finding a job once they graduate.

This is according to a recent survey by gradcracker.com, which revealed that two-thirds of graduates were reasonably or very confident about finding an engineering job.

By contrast, a separate poll by the National Union of Students showed that just one-fifth of all graduates displayed the same level of confidence.

Annie Greenfield-Edwards, Gradcracker's head of student communications, explained that a "good number" of employers in the engineering sector had "continued to recruit", despite others freezing or reducing graduate programmes.

"We were a little concerned that potential engineers might have simply given up hope in the light of generally negative news," she said.

"We were pleased to see that this is not the case."

It was also revealed that 93 per cent of engineering students were prepared to relocate to find work, which compared with 66 per cent of all graduates.

Robert Gordon University recently said that students looking for engineering jobs should consider a work placement to "bridge the gap between education and employment".
