Midland Main Line upgrades could create engineer jobs
Thursday, 20th August 2009, 16::52
Rail engineering jobs look likely to be created on the Midland Main Line after Network Rail unveiled a new strategy.
With demand for rail services on the line expected to increase during the next decade, the company has published the East Midlands Route Utilisation Strategy: Draft for Consultation.
This explores how Network Rail will meet the challenges posed by the increased demand, with working having already begun on a £5.5 billion upgrade to the Thameslink route, which stretches between Bedford and Brighton.
Elsewhere, engineers have initiated linespeed improvements on the Midland Main Line to reduce journey times on long-distance services.
Network Rail route director Dan Crowther said that demand for rail travel had "grown significantly" over the last ten years.
"It is essential that we have a robust strategy in place to build a bigger and better railway and the feedback we receive as part of the consultation process will play an important part in shaping the future of rail services on the Midland Main Line and the East Midlands area," he commented.
The Midland Main Line extends from Sheffield in the north to London St Pancras in the south.
