Construction jobs receive boost in Scotland and Northern Ireland

Friday, 10th July 2009, 11::05

Those in construction jobs are likely to benefit from a stabilisation in terms of new building projects during the second half of 2009.

This is according to Simon Rubinsohn, chief economist at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, who said that the construction industry has "probably seen the worst" of the effects of the recession.

Mr Rubinsohn explained that, while it was still premature to think about light at the end of the tunnel, there has been a "big adjustment".

"We've probably seen the worst of the collapse in output, but I'm not sure [it will] take off very quickly," he commented.

"It's going to be a fairly long haul but we've probably seen the worst of the adjustment downwards."

The economist added that, while the residential sector has been the most affected, commercial developments are also finding themselves under pressure.

According to June's Glenigan Index, the construction industries in Scotland and Northern Ireland have somewhat bucked the downward trend because of increases in public sector building contracts.
