UK experiences Engineering Skills shortage

The UK renewable energy sector in the currently employs 110,000 professionals in the UK but with the rapid expansion of this £12.5b per year industry it is already facing a skills shortage right through the supply chain. According to a recent study by RenewablesUK, the wind and marine energy sector will need to have 88,000 more full time staff by 2021 if the medium energy generation targets are to be met.

The skills shortage is however not restricted to the renewable energy sector and recent reports predict the availability of engineering jobs to increase up to 400,000 by 2020. Consequently one of the biggest challenges facing the sector is attracting the right talent, up skilling and filling these roles. Among the skills most sought after are electrical, mechanical and process engineering particularly at senior and chartered level; all skills that are commonly found within oil and gas, marine and general energy engineering.

Increased need for renewable energy to boost jobs

According to the Renewable Energy Association, meeting the UK’s renewable energy targets will result in the displacement of £60 billion worth of fossil fuels, a majority of which are imported to the UK. Consequently, there will be more funds available for paying salaries on home turf. This is good news for engineers with expertise in this field, because of the need for a much larger workforce, in order to be able to meet the renewables targets by 2020.

“Harnessing our renewables creates employment and means that rather than spending money on energy imports we can keep it circulating in the UK economy,” says REA chief executive Gaynor Hartnell.
