Brown confirms construction jobs to get underway in north-west - 05-09-2008 - 18:02
Brown confirms construction jobs to get underway in north-west Construction jobs on a 500 megawatt offshore wind farm near Barrow-in-Furness in the north-west are set to get underway, it has been revealed.

Speaking at the CBI Scotland annual dinner in Glasgow, prime minister Gordon Brown confirmed planning consent has been granted for the project, New Civil Engineer reports.

The construction jobs will see 139-turbines built at West of Duddon Sands near Walney Island.

According to the newspaper, Mr Brown told the dinner the go-ahead illustrates the country's need for energy security during the credit crunch.

He said: "The oil and food price rises have revealed a growing scramble for resources."

The prime minister then went on to say there needs to be a "revolution" in reducing dependence on oil and achieving security of energy supply and use.

Earlier this year, the Journal reported the north-east has seen a boom in offshore engineering jobs as the area's oil and gas industry is thriving.
