A company has been fined after the death of a man carrying out construction jobs in Falkirk, it has been revealed.
The BBC reports Curot Contracts was ordered to pay £125,000 at Falkirk Sheriff Court for breaches after pleading guilty to failing to ensure the healthy, safety and welfare of staff or a safe system of working.
Witold Jellen, 56, was fatally injured after falling 25ft from a balcony while undertaking construction jobs to turn a former cinema in Falkirk into a sports bar, an accident which the news provider states could have been avoided had crash decks not been removed from the site.
Neil Bowie, prosecuting, told the court Mr Jellen and his colleague, David Cairney, decided to cut a hole in steelworks to help fellow workers rather than calling back contractors.
He added: "Both men fell eight metres, causing fatal injuries to Mr Jellen and cuts and bruises to Mr Cairney.
"Mr Jellen suffered severe head injuries and several fractures to his skull, and a post-mortem revealed he was killed by blunt force trauma to his head."
The Health and Safety Executive is to introduce a variety of new initiatives as part of its Shattered Lives Campaign to protect people in construction jobs, with the Ladder Exchange 2008 taking place this month.
