Government funding helps ignite construction jobs - 03-09-2008 - 11:33
Government funding helps ignite construction jobs Construction jobs on a £84.4 million busway scheme in Luton are set to get underway later this year, it has been revealed.

The Department for Transport has announced it will provide £78.4 million of funding for the project, which had initially been expected to begin in 2003, Contract Journal reports.

Luton borough council has written to firms requesting tenders for construction jobs on the 7.2 mile busway, which will connect Luton and Dunstable together with Luton airport.

A spokesman for the council told the news provider a shortlist of companies to be invited to tender has now been approved following the evaluation of pre-qualification evaluations.

He added: "Tenders will be issued to those shortlisted organisations in the next few weeks. We are unable to release the number and name the organisations invited to tender because that information is commercially sensitive."

In related news, Mace has been named as the delivery partner for construction jobs on the revamp of New Street train station in Birmingham.

The contract, worth £600 million, entails the remodelling of the station and the development of two 30-storey towers at the site.
