Olympic Stadium construction jobs racing ahead - 27-08-2008 - 17:20

Construction jobs to create the foundations for the main stadium of the 2012 London Olympics are almost complete, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has revealed.

Over 3,500 of 4,000 permanent piles have been laid at the site of the Olympic Stadium, adding to more than 100 five-metre columns which have been erected to support the west and south stands of the building.

Furthermore, eight tower cranes are now in place at the site to permit concrete work and steel and roof erection to progress in the Stadium 'bowl'.

John Armitt, ODA chairman, said construction jobs in the development over coming months will show the "size and scale" of the Olympic Stadium.

He added: "As the eyes of the world turn from Beijing to London, they will see that real progress is being made to create the new venues and infrastructure for the 2012 Games."

Last week, the ODA revealed that construction jobs to build the Olympic Park energy centre are set to begin, creating the facilities which will provide the event with power, heating and cooling systems.
