LSE: Top engineering graduates 'will earn significantly more' - 15-10-2008 - 11:39
LSE: Top engineering graduates 'will earn significantly more' Engineering graduates who completed their studies at a top UK university are likely to earn "significantly more money" over the course of their careers than those who attended an institution further down the league tables.

That is the conclusion reached in a new report published by the London School of Economics (LSE), which notes that employers are more willing to take on candidates if they have been deemed to have received a good further education.

While this news is likely to be welcomed by a sizeable number of new graduates going into engineering jobs, those set to go into higher education in the near future may be made to pay a premium for such opportunities.

A university degree significantly raises the earnings of graduates, especially those from the best universities," Iftikhar Hussain, from the LSE's Centre for Economic Performance, told the Guardian.

"So those who go to the top universities should be prepared to contribute more towards the cost of their education than most students."

In addition to relatively high salaries, engineering graduates are also likely to benefit from more favourable working conditions, with Shell having just this week been named as the ninth-best employer in the UK.
