New construction jobs in Glasgow hotel development - 14-10-2008 - 13:23
New construction jobs in Glasgow hotel development New construction jobs will be created in Glasgow after a Dubai hotel company unveiled plans for a new five-star hotel in the city.

Jumeirah Group, the construction firm behind Dubai's landmark "billowing sail" hotel, want to build a 26-storey development on Argyle Street, with plans to open the super deluxe complex in 2011.

The hotel will feature 160 rooms, 85 apartments, a rooftop cocktail lounge and restaurants and bars. Jumeirah have commissioned Progress Property Developments to build the complex, one of the four consortium's hoping to build Glasgow's 2014 Commonwealth Games village.

Commenting on the announcement, Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell told the BBC: "Today's announcement is a resounding vote of confidence in Glasgow and its future ambitions.

"This is made all the sweeter by the fact that Jumeirah does not operate anywhere else in the United Kingdom outside London."

The development in Glasgow will be Jumeirah's fifth hotel in Europe. The hotel, which is yet to be given a name, will be designed by Ian Simpson Architects.
