Train to Gain scheme helps more into construction industry - 10-10-2008 - 17:55
Train to Gain scheme helps more into construction industry More young people have been encouraged to apply for construction jobs thanks to the government's Train to Gain scheme, it has been revealed.

Over 12,000 construction sector companies have been involved in the scheme since it was introduced two years ago by the Learning and Skills Council.

The programme was set up amid concerns that the UK was heading for a major skills shortage, highlighted by the Leitch Review of Skills report at the end of 2006.

With a total of 100,000 companies across all sectors having signed up to the scheme, Chris Banks, chairman of the Learning Skills Council, said that the programme continues to grow in stature.

"Only two years in, Train to Gain is growing in momentum and helping us combat the skills deficit. We still need more businesses to get involved. There's lots of work to be done if we're to strengthen our economy, and compete globally."

The scheme is thought to have helped thousands of people enter the construction and civil engineering sectors, with a number of people learning the necessary skills to enter the industry.
