Design Commission calls for architecture jobs - 10-10-2008 - 10:57
Design Commission calls for architecture jobs The Design Commission of Wales has called for more architect jobs in the country to help the nation's house-building agenda and carbon reduction schemes.

During a design event at Roath Basin Southside, the only large-scale site in Cardiff Bay yet to benefit from redevelopment work, the commission's chief executive said that Welsh architects found often found it hard to compete with the more vocal construction sector.

Calling for more architect positions, Carole-Anne Davies told architect website BD Online: "If we are going to deliver resource-efficient developments that people can live in over the next 25 years and meet our carbon reduction targets, [architects] are going to be crucial."

Ms Davies added that people in construction jobs often have an advantage because they have more lobbying power with ministers, something that isn't always the case in the building design industry.

Last weekend's design event, organised by Igloo Regeneration, was attended by over 80 architects, planners and local residents, as well as a number of Welsh Assembly members.

Igloo Regeneration hope to create a number of construction jobs in their plans to develop the Roath Basin Southside site.
