New construction jobs as expansion of Stansted is approved - 09-10-2008 - 12:44
New construction jobs as expansion of Stansted is approved Transport secretary Geoff Hoon announced today that the large-scale expansion of Stansted Airport has been given the go-ahead, meaning that a number of new construction and civil engineering jobs will be created.

Unions have supported proposals from airport owner BAA, who want to increase annual passenger numbers from 25 million to 35 million and increase flights from 241,000 to 264,000 per year, saying that it will provide a host of new jobs.

Aviation minister Jim Fitzpatrick said the go-ahead was given because of a need for increased runway capacity in the south-east, despite concerns from environmental groups.

Stewart Wingate, Stansted's managing director, said the decision was "great news" for passengers.

"We are naturally delighted that the Secretaries of State have granted permission for the next phase of growth at Stansted," Mr Wingate said.

Plans for the airport's expansion were initially rejected in 2006 amid concerns of noise pollution and the impact on the environment. BAA has since implemented measures to control, manage and minimise the impact on the local environment.
