Redevelopment of New Covent Garden Market will provide construction jobs - 09-10-2008 - 12:49
Redevelopment of New Covent Garden Market will provide construction jobs New construction jobs will be provided in south London after Hilary Benn, secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs (DEFRA), gave the green light for the redevelopment of New Covent Garden Market.

The decision means the Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA), which operates the market on behalf of DEFRA, can begin the search for a private developer for the project and draw up more detailed plans.

Commenting on the green light decision, Baroness Brenda Dean, chairman of the CGMA, said: "This is a major step in redeveloping New Covent Garden Market. We have been working tirelessly for the last 2 years to achieve this result which will guarantee that our market has a future."

The new 540,000 sq ft development project will provide modern market facilities for traders and customers, and will in part be funded by the sale of unwanted land.

New Covent Garden Market has been in operation since 1974. Specialising in fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers and catering services, the building houses 250 companies.
