We are currently looking for a Technical Manager with previous managerial and technical experience in a high risk environment within the food industry to join a leading food manufacturer.

PURPOSE OF JOB

Accountable for the management, development and control of the Technical and Quality Assurance function to achieve compliance with legislation and agreed customer requirements, in line with Company strategic objectives and agreed cost parameters.
Responsibility for food safety, quality and legality at the production sites.

JOB CONTACT AND CONTENT

The jobholder develops and manages the Technical and Quality Assurance activities and procedures necessary and appropriate to a market leading Chilled and ambient Food Manufacturer to ensure compliance with Company, customer and legal requirements.
Responsibility extends to making recommendations for development of the department to address changing needs and subsequent implementation and management. The role calls for the ability to set up, operate and combine the intellectual requirements with a practical making it happen approach within the factory operations.

The jobholder keeps updated on emerging technical legislation likely to have an impact on the business and is responsible for ensuring that appropriate cost-effective actions/solutions are proposed to the Site Operations Director, to ensure on-going compliance.

Operation of the department is against defined budgetary limits.

KEY PROBLEMS FACED

The JH will develop the systems in conjunction with group colleagues, customers and accreditation bodies.

The rapid pace of change creates the need to constantly devise and implement procedures to manage increasingly complex requirements and provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced team player to influence, and assist the change process.

The job will require occasional travelling between sites

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING

The jobholder has responsibility for organising and managing the work activities of the QA and technical departments for the production site and for proposing change against risk/benefit analysis within the department and across other operational areas, in line with business development.

WORKING CONTACTS

Generally with other staff and management at all levels internally. Interaction with Customer Technical representatives, local authorities, technical service suppliers and raw material, packaging suppliers as necessary and other group sites.

An element of direct consumer contact is also necessary in dealing with consumer complaints.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

A food science degree or related equivalent is required. A minimum of 3 years technical/Quality Assurance management experience, ideally gained within a major chilled food manufacturing business is a pre-requisite. Experience in dealing with customer technical staff and achievement of EFSIS/BRC technical requirements would be an advantage.

Well developed communication skills and personal stature, together with a mature personality, tact and diplomacy are mandatory.

i) Implementation and achievement of Technical/Quality requirements.

ii) Submission of Technical budget and achievement of cost targets.

iii) Cost control within department.

iv) Development of process and staff to achieve devolved accountability for quality.

v) To promote and develop the technical function as the centre of expertise in technical and quality matters, both internally and with major customers.

vi) To promote and develop awareness of quality requirements at all levels of the
business.

vii) Development and maintenance of strong professional relationships with
customer representatives and those of enforcing authorities.
