The assigned project is a satellite communications system, and will consist of two large satellites plus the associated ground communications planning, control and monitoring infrastructure.

The software comprises three main elements;
Control & Monitoring (C&M) of the elements of the Communications Network.
Communications Network Planning.
Communications Network Performance.

The C&M software: comprises Element Management Applications for the various terminal types supported by the system (Ground Stations, Fixed, Naval, Fly-Away, Transportable, Vehicle-Mounted). The EMAs provide platform configuration and self-test back to the Network Control Centre, and allow system operators to change element characteristics both locally and remotely. It is based on similar packages and technologies applied in other communications programmes, but adapted to the specific set of project requirements.

The Network Planning software: comprises end-user Service Ordering, end-to-end Service Planning, Network element Communications Planning and Prioritisation. The resultant static and dynamic planning results are disseminated across the whole network and scheduled for enactment through the EMAs. This will be based on similar software suites developed for other communications programmes, but will required substantial further design for the assigned project.

The Network Performance software: is based on the management of network wide Assets, managed through a relational database implementation. The software collects data from EMAs, and performs Network and Satcom Performance and Fault Monitoring, Quality of Service measurement, and Asset status updating. Significant levels of Service Reporting and Problem/ Incident Reporting are supported. A large amount of this software will be COTS products, required to be configured and tailored to support the project requirements, and integrated with the other management capabilities through the underlying relational database.

Successful candidates will be required to be security cleared prior to appointment.
