Description
Job Specification
1. Undertake structural design and analysis tasks in support of the company's programmes for
submarines/ships
2. Generate structural solutions/configurations and provide the associated supporting analytical assessment
demonstrating fitness for purpose and safety
3. Undertake code based structural design to Naval/Lloyds or other relevant national structural standards
4. For specialised roles, undertake advanced finite element analysis (eg. non-linear elasto-plastic,
fatigue etc)
5. Provide guidance information (via sketches/drawings etc) support and advice to CAD design/modelling
teams
6. Ensure designs are efficient and compatible with economic considerations to design for production and
cost reduction
Person Specification
1. Good analysis capabilities as well as an ability to understand and scheme out structural arrangements
2. Works well in a multi-discipline environment and is pro-active in taking responsibility and seeking out all
required supporting information
3. Has the personal resourcefulness and desire to be able to develop and widen capability
4. High level of computer literacy and ability to use software tools
Qualifications
1. Graduate/chartered status in mechanical engineering/structural eng./naval architecture/mathematics
Experience
1. Ideally experienced in submarine/ship structural design or related field (eg. offshore engineering)
2. Knowledge of classical stress analysis, ability to use appropriate first principles/standard or code formulae
3. Applications from structural integrity specialists in finite element analysis, fatigue and fracture, safety
case work etc would be welcomed
4 Experience of communicating via sketches/schematics
5. For specialist roles significant experience of the ABAQUS finite element code would be an advantage
