Job Title: Senior Principal Design Engineer
Location: Northampton
Purpose of Job
To supervise design and analysis work on engine and vehicle projects
Duties
-To prepare and approve engineering programme quotations
-To generate, resource and cost project plans
-To monitor the timing and budgetary performance of design-only projects against
project plans
-To lead design project teams
-To organise and facilitate design reviews
-To generate, evaluate and select design solutions for individual components,
component systems, and complete powertrains
-To approve engineering drawings and models
-To liaise with programme suppliers and external customers
-To provide technical support to projects
-To contribute to technical capability of the design department
-To support business development opportunities, in conjunction with the business
development function
-To monitor and assess the performance of staff.
-To generate and implement design department procedures
-To identify training needs
-To perform any other duties reasonably requested by management to fulfil the
requirements of the role
Qualifications
-A Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline with extensive powertrain design
experience or alternatively, an HND supported by a minimum of 15 years experience.
-A postgraduate qualification / Chartered status would be an advantage
Experience
-Relevant experience in the field of powertrain design engineering
gained within an OEM or preferably consultancy environment
Skills
-Good level of base engine knowledge is essential
-Able to supervise and motivate others
-Ability to lead and work as part of a team
-Presentation and negotiation skills
-Creative problem solving skills
-Detail conscious with an appreciation of customer requirements
Competencies
-Ability to work on own and as part of a team
-Confidence to communicate effectively at all levels
-Must be self-motivated and possess the drive to complete tasks in a timely manner
and with appropriate attention to detail
-Ability to work well under pressure and to strict time constraints
-Flexibility and willingness to travel to customer sites for both long and short durations
(including secondments)
Responsibilities
-Responsible for the quality of any design work carried out in the course of assigned
projects
-Responsible for adhering to or seeking deviation from the design procedures
-Responsible for the clear instruction of staff using the appropriate procedures
and forms
-Responsible for communicating design status to internal and external customers in a
timely manner
-Responsible for maintaining and enhancing capability in at least one area of
technical specialism
