Duties
To provide professional electrical engineering support in carrying out projects related to the technical systems of th scientific research facility. The key duties of the post are to take a pro-active lead in the delivery of a range of assigned projects interacting closely with in-house and external scientific and engineering staff. Provide creative, innovative and adaptive solutions to problems involved with the multi-disciplined engineering systems and provide professional leadership to the electrical design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning phases. Negotiate, agree and write technical specifications, produce and monitor project management plans including Gantt charts, resource and procurement plans. Prepare budget submissions, taking budget responsibility and signing powers as required. Responsible for leading permanent staff and supervising contract staff. Produce layouts, design concepts and calculations in support of designs performing or supervising CAD and performance calculations as required. Organise and chair various Technical, Managerial and Safety related meetings. Lead Hazard and Risk Assessment analysis and pursue solutions to mitigate risks. Monitor operational performance, identifying areas for improvement, proposing and implementing new procedures, systems and equipment or changes to existing. Keep up to date with relevant technology and industry best practice, identifying and initiating training provision to fill skills gaps. Maintain and manage project files containing all relevant project documentation and complete formal handover of projects to the relevant client. Produce presentations, papers and posters for relevant workshops and conferences.
The successful candidate is likely to have a honours degree or equivalent in electrical engineering or a relevant discipline with a minimum of 5 years responsibility for electrical aspects of larger scale, multi-disciplined projects, completing specifications and managing to time, cost and quality. A membership of a professional body would be considered advantageous. Significant experience in the procurement, installation and commissioning of multi-disciplined engineering systems. Skills and experience required to lead a small team and to supervise design staff. Practical knowledge and experience of safety design methodology and, in particular, how it should be applied to electrical equipment and circuits.
Good knowledge of PLC based systems, sensors, field instrumentation, ultra high vacuum, communications and control systems. Good knowledge of motion control systems, actuators and encoders. Some knowledge of Electrical installations in buildings including power distribution, lighting, telecoms, HVAC, etc would be useful.
