Senior Buyer - to work for a world recognised authority in the design and manufacture of communications and audio ancillary equipment for both the military and commercial market sectors.
This role is commutable from Watford, St. Albans, Hatfield, Ealing and Barnet.
Reporting to the Procurement Manager you will take responsibility and ownership for managing Electrical Components - components such as ICs, connectors, cable, transformers, transducers, mics, Cable assemblies, PCBs. Become an 'expert' in that area of spend and build a knowledge of potential sources of supply, including offshore sources where appropriate. Strategically develop a supply base that meets all customer and company requirements and has the capability of sustaining the aggressive growth of the company. Responsible for delivering material on-time and in full to meet production and other business requirements. Ensure all material is ordered in a timely manner to meet customer requirements and reflects MRP demand.
Key Tasks
To reduce the stock-holding and increase inventory turns to maximise cash, of that commodity, whilst maintaining service levels. To ensure that that area of spend generates year on year material cost savings (measured by PPV - Purchase Price Variance). Reduce or eliminate all non-value adding activity where possible (through use of kanban, effective stock management, e-commerce, lean processes, etc). Implement standardisation, rationalisation and value engineering projects, working closely with Production Engineering and Design teams, where appropriate. Ensure supplier relationships are effectively managed, with regular business reviews with all key and critical suppliers to ensure continual improvements. Negotiate commercial terms and have in place partnership or supply agreements with those key and critical suppliers. Manage the supply base to increase / maintain leverage with suppliers whilst managing risk to ensure continuity of supply.

Formulate, recommend and implement appropriate strategies to ensure the strategic long-term objectives, and to ensure the supply base is capable of sustaining the aggressive growth of the company. Ensure an effective process is in place to ensure suppliers delivery commitments are captured, managed and accurately reported upon. Maintain the integrity of supplier / item data to ensure MRP / ERP is effective and meeting the needs of the business. Be prepared to expedite where appropriate. Company policies and processes are followed at all times.
Experience, Skills and Attributes
Previous experience in a Purchasing role, within a manufacturing / technical environment is ESSENTIAL with demonstrative ability to manage and motivate suppliers. Strong demonstrable commercial skills and awareness. Excellent supplier relationship skills. Strong negotiating skills. Good communication skills, and able to communicate at all levels of the organisation. Technical knowledge in Electronics and Mechanical components would be an advantage. Experience of sourcing in low cost offshore economies would be beneficial. Strong communication skills. Good analytical skills. Knowledge and experience of using modern ERP / MRP systems. Ability to forge strong internal relationships is key.
Team working ability but also self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision. Professional qualification in Purchasing or Supply (such as CIPS) or a relevant business degree is essential.
Be prepared to travel, including overseas, as necessary.
