Principal Design Engineer
Our Client is a leading development partner of the automobile and engine industry with a proven and unique system competence in the area of combustion engines and engine peripherals. They are among the top 3 system suppliers for Piston Systems, Cylinder Components, Valve Train Systems, Air Management Systems and Liquid Management Systems.
The Role:
To be responsible for the technical delivery of powertrain programmes and for major engine design programmes, including clean sheet programmes to clients
This is a combined role where you will spend approximately 75% of your time in a Design Leader role and the remaining 25% spent as a Technical Specialist covering one of the following areas of base engine or vehicle systems:
1) Short Engine
2) Lube System and cam drive
3) Cylinder head system
4) Intake and exhaust
5) Accessory drives & cooling systems
6) EMS and emissions systems
As Design Leader:
To provide technical direction for design on major programmes and to lead design teams
To work closely with clients and suppliers, in addition to internal teams in development, calibration, build and test functions
To provide input into project/resource planning requirements
To consider manufacturing/assembly requirements with respect to the project
To provide calculations and information to support the design process
To make presentations to clients in relation to the design work in hand
As Technical Specialist:
To act as the specialist with respect to engine systems and sub-systems
To maintain system specifications and FMEAs
To oversee Development/Calibration/Analysis feedback
To create technical articles and presentations
To provide technical guidance across projects
To document relevant manufacturing processes
Requirements:
A minimum of an HNC/Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Production or Aerospace Engineering is preferred
Alternatively an Apprenticeship served in Mechanical Engineering or postgraduate workshop experience together with a minimum of 5 years experience in Powertrain Design, with previous responsibility for large Powertrain subsystems is acceptable
Good level of base engine knowledge is essential
Experience of major CAD systems such as CATIA, CADDS5, SDRC Ideas and/or Pro-Engineer
Team worker with good communication skills and a sense of humour, showing proven experience in a design leader role
Ideally be enthusiastic and creative, while utilising good organisational and planning skills
Experience of Microsoft Office is desirable
