The Central Engineering technical unit for Data Processing & On Board Software comprises departments in UK, France and Germany. The function of the technical unit is to provide a central competence that meet evolving needs of the business, working on satellite platforms, payloads and equipment.

The Central Engineering technical unit for Data Processing & On Board Software comprises departments in UK, France and Germany. The function of the technical unit is to provide a central competence that meet evolving needs of the business, working on satellite platforms, payloads and equipment.
As part of the UK Central Engineering On Board Software Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for the on-board software project management (SPM) of new developments or maintenance on behalf of internal or external Customer s.
The SPM shall ensure that all commitments are fully achieved with respect to the Customer, the quality objectives and the on-board software process objectives. With particular involvement in the following (depending on project needs):-
Set up, lead, monitor, control and conclude software project s in respect of the organisation, the processes and the commitments (requirements, quality, timescales and costs).
Produce, monitor and maintain project schedule.
Produce and maintain the development and maintenance plans supported by the Technical responsible.
Contribute to the effectiveness of the organisation using the resources and skills from the appropriate specialised departments identify software team training needs.
Prepare, lead and conclude the project reviews and the Customer deliveries in close coordination with the Customer, the Technical responsible and the Software Quality Engineer,
Lead the subcontracting process: to select the company(ies) working on the project, to manage the subcontractor in coordination with the identified Software Production Responsible for the technical aspects, to close the contract at the end of the activities.
Communicate with the Project hierarchy, the direct Customer and when necessary with the final Customer.
Prepare the project review documentation & To report on software status to project & department hierarchy.
Produce project metrics and indicators (collection, checking, analysis and publishing),
Manage software changes (definition, negotiation, decision).
Anticipate potential difficulties by operational management of the project risks.
To deliver an on-board quality software.
The Software Project Manager is also expected to :-
Be willing to travel & work for periods in company offices in France or Germany & for reviews at Customer sites.
Participate in ongoing implementation of trans-national harmonisation of software tools, methods & processes.
Identify & promote reuse of existing software functions (or building blocks).
Participate in proposal bids.
Manage their own time and budgets in accordance with project and department requirements.
Participate in workshops & presentations within the company and Space Agency establishments.
Participate in smaller software development s where the need for a full-time project manager is not justified.
The Department is involved in the complete lifecycle of activities relating to On-Board Software development. These range from requirements capture, support to system
engineering, design, implementation, verification and validation, and maintenance.
The software developed by this Department is of an embedded real time nature. Software is deployed within the Satellite, and Satellite Instrumentation, to provide the required Functionality and Control. Typically, the software would: be designed using UML; coded in the ANSI-C language; contain a number of hardware interface drivers; and incorporate the use of a Real-time Operating System. Its application elements would normally include: Telemetry & Telecommand communications; Attitude and Orbit Control Systems; Mode control & management, and Health Monitoring/Reporting. Specialist applications will depend on the mission.
The Research and Development activities ensure the Department maintains its breadth and depth of knowledge and takes advantage of advancing technologies that meet the constraints of demanding space environments. R&D studies typically include: software architectures and the suitability of new processors and operating systems for use in space. Also covered are studies on new tools and methods to ensure ongoing improvements and competitive advantage.
Other departmental work may also include supporting the preparation of technical proposals in response to space agencies or other funding institutions.
Successful candidates will be required to be security cleared prior to appointment.
