My Client designs, develops and supports automated test equipment for the disk drive industry. They currently have a requirement for a Mechanical Design and Development Engineer.

Products

There are three categories of product involved;

- Test Cells
These are densely packaged injection moulded plastic assembly devices which contain a number of electronic components and air flow management. Hard Drives (HDDs) under test are cycled through controlled thermal profiles. Vibration noise is isolated with patented isolation techniques.

- Infrastructure
Large scale mechanical structures which contain arrays of test cells. Water cooling is distributed throughout involving pumps and heat exchangers etc.

- Automation
Auto loading / unloading of HDDs to the infrastructure system is provided by an internal handler which services the full system envelope.

The successful candidate will work in one or more of the above product lines. Specialist thermal and dynamics engineers are part of the team to support design development of the three product ranges.



Prerequisites

- Solidworks 3D CAD modelling system or equivalent
- Minimum HND in mechanical engineering
- Product mechanical design and development
- A quality focus and approach within an ISO9000/2000 environment
- Structures
- Familiarity in designing with plastics.
- Application of FMEA
- Component dimensioning and tolerancing
- Product documentation, release and change control
- A thorough working knowledge of 3D modelling systems mechanical design / drafting methods.
- Must demonstrate a good knowledge of FEA
- DFMA techniques

Desirable

- Plastics design for volume manufacture
- Understanding of vibration and dynamics
- Product reliability and performance testing
- Manufacturing methods and process design
- Experience in Automation systems involving mechanisms, pneumatics, control systems
