Materials Engineer

We are supporting a global, diverse technology leader and the World's largest and most successful engine company. Our client leads the field in the design and manufacture of high-performance engines. Their continuous development programme, dedicated to furthering engine design allows them to offer one of the most advanced and comprehensive ranges of purpose-built diesel engines available today.

They are committed to an expansion programme throughout 2007 and beyond that includes the acquisition of a wide range of engineering specialists within: Mechanical Engineering, CAE, Performance & Emissions, Electronics, Global Engine Development and Aftertreatment.

Global Engine Development (GED) is part of the 'Technology and Solutions Division' which provides support to Product Engineering for a wide range of services from new engine development to updates on current products.

The Role:

To work as part of a team to ensure the correct running and reliability of engines both in the field and in controlled environments by using your own initiative and by following current procedures

Undertaking investigatory tests weather in the field or in laboratory environments, being involved in the FMEA and PPAP processes

Supporting customers and liaising with suppliers to ensure timely solutions are made to maintain clients reputation and reinforce relations

Manufacturing support is also vital and as such you will play a key role in providing the required verified data to the manufacturing team so they can make an informed decision on the material to be selected

Requirements:

HND, relevant degree or equivalent in metallurgy or materials engineering desired

Relevant work experience of materials engineering in an automotive and/or manufacturing field, conducting Forensic failure investigations is preferred

Knowledge of metallographic preparation techniques, SEM/EDX, Optical Microscopy, NDT and various analysis methods

Good material properties knowledge, including ferrous and aluminium based alloys

Knowledge of polymeric materials and engine components a bonus

Use of Microsoft software packages (Word, Excel)

Self motivated, with the ability to work on own initiative
Good interpersonal & communication skills, being able to interpret and convey information to non-metallurgists both verbally and in formal reports, and at all levels of a large organisation

Strong analytical skills are desirable
