Description

Formed in 1986 and comprising 20 European member states, EUMETSAT's role is to establish, operate and exploit European meteorological satellite systems. Data from these systems are essential for precise and accurate weather forecasting; they also assist global earth observation and climatological programmes and directly benefit
national economies by enabling marine, agricultural, aviation and other industries to plan
and act more effectively.

Low Earth Orbit Satellite System Manager

Currently the systems include two generations of geostationary Meteosat satellites whose global overview is now complemented by the detailed observations provided by polar orbiting MetOp satellites.

The Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Division is responsible for the design and development phases of all EUMETSAT LEO Systems from the start of Phase B until the completion of in-orbit commissioning and hand-over to routine Operations. Since the successful commissioning of the Metop-A satellite in May 2007, the main tasks of the division are to prepare for the subsequent launches and commissioning of the next two Metop satellites currently planned in 2011 and 2015, to conduct EUMETSAT development activities on the future Altimetry missions and relevant Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) missions and to support the Phase 0/A activities of the next
EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS) programme. The LEO Division is now looking to fill the following position:

The LEO System Manager will report to the Head of the LEO Division and will be responsible for direction and control of system engineering activities of the LEO Programmes, coordination and management of the technical interactions between the entities and coordination with other EPS programme disciplines such as project planning and control, and quality assurance. The role will also support the preparation for post-EPS Low Earth Orbit programmes in Phase 0/A and end-to-end technical aspects of the LEO systems in development acting as the System Design Authority. The successful candidate will have a University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline or comparable qualifications in an engineering field combined with demonstrated experience of at least ten years in the development or operations of Earth Observation systems. This experience shall include a minimum of 7 years in a key managerial and system level position, and management experience of an end-to-end instrument chain.

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in one of these languages and also have a working knowledge of the other.

Based in Darmstadt, the post is offered on an initial four-year contract.
