Java Software Engineer - The Java software engineering roles work within the Common Services team of the Solutions Design IPT. The common services software engineers will be responsible to the Technical Lead on the programme. The Common Services Team: Designs, develops, codes and unit test each software element of the common services architecture. Works closely with the test harness software development team establishing an interface to ensure that the development responds to the project needs. Establishes strong relationships with the programmes customer, key stakeholders, subcontractors, and company US counterparts. There will be formal project meetings and working groups and so candidates must be comfortable with collaborative working to develop an overall solution. Ensures that all engineering activities undertaken under their control are conducted to a common standard that reflects best practice, and are in accordance with CMMI as instantiated in the company IPDS. Uses company 6 Sigma proactively to foster a culture of continuous process improvement.

Education and Experience
Essential
Degree in Scientific or Engineering discipline; experience of software development tasks on at least one major programme; demonstrable experience in IS design and solution implementation; solid JAVA experience; extensive knowledge and experience as Systems or software Engineer with full lifecycle coverageDesirableSecond degree in relevant subject.

Demonstrable Experience and Knowledge
Those with experience in some of the following areas will be considered: Deep understanding of the software development lifecycle, and demonstrable application of relevant methodologies and toolsets; Proven and successful track record in design and delivery of systems for major database intensive, system integration programmes;Solid Java skills, with experience in J2EEDesign implementation in database intensive systemsSoftware validation planning and implementationSome database design/development experience including XML.
Knowledge and recent application of: COTS IS applications; Portal & UI design; High Availability Design (24/7 year round); Recent BEA Weblogic & BEA Aqualogic experience; Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and associated fraemeworks; Travel Industry Knowledge; Business Acumen for Business Development Support.
