We are looking to appoint Repair Technologists based within our clients' base in Derby. These teams work as part of Assystem's Routine Engineering Group on our Clients site. The additional engineers are required to assist the teams when technical variance requests are received from Engine Overhaul Bases for repairs that vary from the client's repair manual. The engineer then conducts analysis and assessments in order to provide an engineering solution and thus, preparation of approvals for the repair, so that it can be safely and economically carried out by the overhaul base. Variance could include critical crack growth, failure of gas turbine components, material or external stresses, and failure of welding joints or manufacturing issues.
The Overhaul Support teams have delegated authority from the Civil Aviation Authority to approve variations from the published engine technical manuals. The teams support RB211 and Trent civil aero engines. This is not a hands on position.
The requests typically involve wear of a component outside of manual limits, damage or a request to minimize level of engine strip and if accepted contribute to reducing the cost of engine overhauls. The assessment will involve gaining an understanding of the component and the potential effect of accepting the deviation. The engineer will need to liaise with both design and stress engineers to get approvals for the variance. This involves analysis of component failure and providing an engineering solution to rectify the failure.
Engineers must have experience of either Practical and Theoretical gas turbine knowledge or salvaging /repair of complex machinery. It is essential that engineers are educated to degree level or equivalent from either Aerospace, Mechanical, Production, Manufacturing or Scientific background.
