A first class career opportunity for a Development Engineer to join the leading designer and supplier of pyrotechnic products for defence and commercial applications, utilising energetic materials technology.
As Development Engineer you will assist in the design, development and qualification of new or existing pyrotechnic products under the guidance of the Engineering and Technology Manager or other senior development staff. You will develop pyrotechnic systems, assemblies, sub-assemblies and components and provide technical support to other business areas including Manufacturing and Q&BI.
As Development Engineer your main responsibilities will include developing pyrotechnic systems, assemblies, sub assemblies and components in support of new, modified or existing products under the guidance of the Senior Development Engineer and other senior development staff. You will maintain design records primarily in the form of Project Design Files, as well as prepare and modify scheme, detail and assembly drawings using 2D/3D CAD packages. You will also produce technical reports, papers, specifications, test plans, handbooks, product markings and maintain build standards of products under test and other design related documentation in PDF.
You will participate in product Design Reviews and assist in Type Approval and Qualification testing programmes and support certification of new, modified and existing products. You will produce designs of packaging as and when required for new or existing products and liaise with other business areas to ensure the effective transition of new or modified products into volume manufacture. You will also liaise with external suppliers to solve problems and ensure timely and correct introduction of new parts and maintenance of existing ones.

The Development Engineer also provides technical support to other business areas as appropriate to maintain existing product range and provide support and information on new products. He/she also investigates manufacturing problems and implements remedial measures as appropriate. You will also carry out investigations in support of customer complaints and other faults and identify new technology, techniques, ideas and assembly methods to improve product safety, performance, quality and reliability and increase product profitability. Participate in resultant product improvement programmes or feasibility studies. You will also evaluate and report on competitors products and potential factored products as and when necessary and represent the company and interface with external parties in a professional manner, by being well prepared and informed.
You will help to maintain a safe working environment in accordance with the company Health and Safety Manual. Provide advice to the safety management team, as and when necessary, on any areas of your expertise. Furthermore you will undertake any other duties within E&T that are requested by your manager to aid the performance of the function. These duties will not be of greater or more complex nature and level of responsibility than those of the post holder, except with appropriate mutual agreement and necessary training.
Successful candidates will be qualified to at least HND level or equivalent in an engineering discipline. You will have previous knowledge of new product design and development and ISO 9001 standards. Knowledge of plastic mouldings, extrusions, pressings and other materials and processes appropriate to the pyrotechnic industry is also required. Product development experience in medium / high volume manufacturing environment, ideally gained within the pyrotechnic and explosives industry is also essential.
You will also be computer literate (familiar with the use of Microsoft Office applications including Project, Word, Excel and Power Point) and have experience of interpretation of technical drawings. The ability to operate 2D/3D CAD system is also required. Organisational skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines are essential, as is the ability to work individually or as part of a team. You will have a smart appearance and have sound social skills and judgement.
